More than just a word, trust is essential for effective leadership. Here are 8 actionable strategies for building trust-based relationships with team members.

Discussions around building trust-based relationships are prevalent in the corporate/business ecosystem. "Building trust-based relationships" is a catchphrase that has echoed throughout professional halls due to its profound importance to effective leadership. While it still decorates many a business article and social media post, unfortunately it remains an unfulfilled endeavor for many leaders.

Trust, in all of its multifaceted dimensions, sets the bedrock for successful relationships with our customers, clients, and vendors. However, we often fail to affirm, by our actions and behaviors, the importance of trust-based relationships within the realm of our employees and teams that we lead—the heartbeat of our entities.

Leaders Naively Consider Themselves Trustworthy

Drawing from experience and observations gathered over three decades of executive search and coaching, it can be noted that leaders rarely, if ever, seek out professional coaching services to expressly build trust-based relationships. An obvious conclusion would be that most leaders consider themselves trustworthy, that trust is a given, and that every member of their team already inherently trusts them. However, this perception is often not aligned with reality.

Whether it’s unpalatable or just surprising, the fact remains—even competent leaders often fail in their roles because they are unable to nurture a culture where others can rely on them, trust their integrity and conviction, and believe that the leaders share and support their best interests.

Creating trust does not happen overnight. It is a delicate structure, built on the pillars of commitment, hard work, strength of character, and most importantly, integrity. It’s a conscious undertaking that demands consistency and intentionality over time.

Here are some actionable strategies that can expedite a leader’s journey to building trust-based relationships.

8 Strategies for Building Trust Based Relationships

  1. Admit mistakes. Acknowledge and learn from your errors, demonstrating humility and willingness to grow to your team.

  2. Show appreciation. Recognize and consistently praise the accomplishments and contributions of team members.

  3. Be open to learning. Embrace suggestions and feedback from your team, and be sure to implement team member’s contributions.

  4. Always be honest. Communicate transparently and truthfully at all times.

  5. Honor commitments. Deliver on promises, ensuring that your actions align with your words.

  6. Stand up for what’s right. Advocate for just and ethical practices within the team and the organization. Your actions speak louder than words.

  7. Communicate clearly. Convey information and expectations in an easy-to-understand manner.

  8. Champion development. Invest in the growth and progress of your team members.

When the virtue of trustworthiness blooms within a leader, it creates an atmosphere of psychological safety for their teams, leading to heightened performance levels.

So, as leaders, we must ask ourselves, what are we doing to build trust-based relationships? The importance of this introspection stands as a challenge to as all—a challenge to make trust-building an intentionally pivotal element of our leadership journey. Trust is more than word, it’s an action, a resolute commitment, a blueprint for transformative leadership. Let’s live it by weaving into our organizational fibers and watch it transform our environments and performance landscapes.
